    • Jaime Rojo’s “In the Forest of the Monarchs” wins overall

Mexico’s El Rosario Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is home to overwintering monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus). The monarch butterflies have adapted to live in these low elevations where the oyamel fir trees, mostly Abies divino, are cold and humid.

A delicate microclimate has been adapted to by the butterflies, and even the slightest changes in the forest canopy can adversely affect this microclimate.

The sanctuary was founded in the early 2000s because of conservation efforts, but deforestation remained a problem. Mexico-led international coalition created a trust fund in this period to work with local communities to reduce deforestation, which has steadily declined since 2009.”
